*A giclee (zhee-CLAY) is an individually produced, high-resolution, high-fidelity reproduction done on a special large format printer. Giclees are produced from digital scans of existing artwork. Also, since many artists now produce only digital art, there is no "original" that can be hung on a wall. Giclees solve that problem, while creating a whole new vibrant medium for art.

Giclees can be printed on any number of media, from canvas to watercolor paper to transparent acetates. Giclees are superior to traditional lithography in several ways. The colors are brighter, last longer, and are so high-resolution that they are virtually continuous tone, rather than tiny dots. The range, or "gamut" of color for giclees is far beyond that of lithograph

About the Artist:

Fletcher C. Derrick, Jr., M. D. is a Urologist in Private Practice in Charleston, S. C. He studied at the Gibbes Art Gallery Adult Education Program in 1990 and did a number of pastel paintings mostly for his family and friends. At age 70, and still not wanting to retire, he reduced his practice and enrolled in oil painting art class at The College of Charleston under Lynne Riding. He fell in love with oils and color theory. Since his class at C of C he has studied with Joyce Hall, Martin Ahrens of Tidwell Art Gallery Art School, and Emmie Brunson of McClellanville, SC. He is currently studying under Joyce Hall. He paints at home and in the studio and has done some plein air painting.

His interest in painting roses comes from 35 years of growing roses as his main hobby. He currently has 120 rose bushes in his garden at 12 Orange Street in Charleston, S. C, where he resides with his wife Martha. He is a Consulting Rosarian for the American Rose Society and is an accredited Horticultural Rose Judge.
